June
June 20 – Happy Father’s Day. It’s so easy to talk about fathers in Scripture…and anyone of them would be a great lesson on Father’s Day, but today – the kids and I talked about an unnamed father. But the example of his love points us to the very essence of God’s love for us.
When Jesus was sharing parables, he spoke about the Prodigal son. This boy decided that he wanted to leave home, with his entire inheritance, and find his way. So, his father (who must have been a very patient man), granted his wish. The boy left home, and lived it up. When the money ran out – he found himself hungry, and when the pig’s food started to look good – he knew that he had messed up. Realizing that he had a home where every need could be met, he planned to humble himself before his dad, and offer to become a servant.
Back at the farm, the older brother (who had continued to work hard beside his dad) thought all the remaining fortune was his. So, one day, as the dad saw the younger son coming up the property he ordered a party, and ran out to meet his son with open arms. No questions asked, just open arms. Isn’t that how we all want our fathers to be…loving and forgiving?
Today, honour dad – tell him how much you love him, and thank him for all the times that he chose to show you love and to forgive you. Then thank your heavenly father for doing the same.
